Energy comes from....Where?

We need energy. So humans have been getting our energy needs met in many different ways.  Our energy sources are either renewable or non-renewable, and are some are very different from the others.

To get ourselves thinking, the grade fives came up with riddles about various energy sources.

Some were quite difficult; we were really stumped!

Below there are pictures of the riddles. The first picture will be the clues, and the next picture is a drawing (or diagram) of the answer. Energy for Work and Play

Energy is a fantastic unit for the grade fives as they really seem interested and want to be learning more and more.

We discovered that there are two types of energy: Potential energy and Kinetic energy. Did you know that using a slingshot is a great way to explore these types of energy? Just be careful not to hurt anyone!

Tomorrow we will look further into potential and kinetic energy as they come in different forms. For example, the potential energy an object has based on its height is termed gravitational potential energy, while the potential energy that is stored in the nucleus of an atom is termed nuclear potential energy.

To understand these forms of energy a bit better, I thought the grade fives should have an understanding of the `atom` and its parts.

Who better to explain the atom than the one and only: Bill Nye the Science Guy!

Exploration of many Belief Systems!

Hinduism, Buddhism, Islam, and Judaism are just some of the belief systems that exist today and people follow all our the world.

Due to the summative assessment, the grade five students know quite a bit about these religions and, now, I do too! It was very impressive how much information they were able to learn. But what I was really happy to witness was how they worked together to make a plan, and get all their work completed. Successful team work is key for a good finished product.

The Research Process

A big part of grade five is learning how to research properly, which is a detailed process that takes time and practice. The grade five students have been learning how to search books for information, take down notes based on what is relevant to them, share this information, and then reflect on their learning.

The summative assessment for this unit, requires each group to research a particular religion. We are nearing the end and they are just about to put it all together as a brochure and special `performance`.

Personal Symbols

In grade five, we believe in many different things, and have different likes and dislikes. To represent our beliefs, values, likes, and favourite activities everybody made a personal symbol.
 
Of course, now we have 11 brand new symbols unique in every way!

I Believe...

...that our new unit is turing out to be a great chance to get to know each other better!

At the start of this unit, the grade fives discussed and shared their beliefs. They agreed with each other, and disagreed with each other over certain beliefs. However, they all agreed that these differences were a GOOD thing, which shows their thoughtfulness.

We discussed how symbols represent different beliefs, and how they can express individual beliefs or those shared by bigger communities.

At the end of our unit Legacies of Past Civilizations, the grade fives had the opportunity to choose a civilization and a system that was important to its history.

We had a lot of great choices, and everybody learned a great deal!
