The best assembly in the history of all assemblies!

This time last week, the grade fives were anxiously waiting for their assembly (or maybe that was their teacher!).

It was a smashing success as the other PYP students laughed at all the funny bits, and listened attentively at all the important parts. 

We were all very proud of the work they did!

The grade fives were so good, they might even be sharing their performance with the MYPs. Amazing! 

 

 

 

Our Grade Five Camp Experience...

....In pictures!

I promised photos of our fabulous time at Augusta Raurica so here they are.

We found a nice green space close to the hostel. Nearby there was an old tower, that was build in the 13th century! Definitely ancient.

 

 

Our tour guide was AMAZING! Not only did she really know her stuff, but she made it interesting. We gave her a big thank you at the end.

 

 

 

The students pretended to be Roman children, and solved some math problems. I love to see them solve math problems outside of the classroom :)

Okay. Let`s not forget a very important part of camp. Wall climbing! I was really impressed with how the students helped each other. I have a feeling this won`t be the last time wall climbing for these kids!

World Book

In grade 5, students have the opportunity to complete research projects. That means we need to provide them with many different types of sources so they can learn lots of new facts. One online source is World Book.

Below is a letter written by our lovely librarian to share with you any information you may need.

Dear Parents,

ISW Library Media Centre has recently added World Book Online to our subscription information sources. World Book Online suits the needs of our school really well. The encyclopedia articles are accessible in 4 different levels:  Kids (Grades 1-5), Student (Grades 5-8,  Advanced (Grades 7 and up) and Discover (for older EAL students). The articles in the encyclopedia can be listened to and translated into many languages. Students using the Student version also have the possibility to save their research in a personal folder, where they can keep track of the articles and books they use in their research.

 

At ISW students have direct access to World Book Online (since our IP address is recognized by World Book’s website). To access this from home students need to login to www.worldbookonline.com. Students have been given a login name and password for these purposes (on a World Book bookmark). This login information is only for ISW students and should not be shared with people not associated with our school.

 

Grade 5 students have created personal folders (for which the login and password is the same that they use to login at computers at school). They have practiced using this feature this and they all know how to successfully create a research project and add information sources to this.

Scholastic Book Orders

 

There was great excitement this week as Scholastic Book Club leaflets were given out. Hopefully they have arrived home by now and you are enjoying browsing and choosing books.

 

Orders need to be returned to the ISW office by Monday 17th September so that the order can be sent later in the week. As the office is very busy, and to ensure that your order arrives safely, please make sure that it is in a clearly marked envelope with the correct money in CHF. This will also be a great help to the office staff who kindly collect the orders so you don't have to find Lisa Stevens, the mum who organises the Book order. If for any reason the leaflet has not arrived home, there is a copy in the PA room, and more copies in the library.  Ordered books should be here by Autumn break.

 

Both Scholastic and Baker Books (the other company we use) reward ISW with books worth 20% of order value, meaning that we are able to buy more books for the library and for use in the classroom so it's a good way of encouraging reading as well as supporting the school. 

Welcome to the grade 5 blog!

The school year has been in full swing for almost 5 weeks now, and a lot has happened! A new unit, Legacies of Ancient Civilisations, has been our focus for these past few weeks allowing students to become historians, Egyptologists, and archaeologists.

Of course we cannot forget camp! 

Camp was tons of fun and educational too. The grade fives asked a zillion questions on our field trip to Augusta Raurica so I just know they learned quite a bit. Also, we cannot leave out the wall climbing, swimming, and Tinguely museum!
